In these times of less people to do more work than ever, I bet there are a few of us that are returning to doing tasks that others used to do for you or your team. Think of it as everyone moving down a notch. I know that I am constantly involved in transactions that would previously not have come across my desk. We are all seemingly taking on more and different things every day. If you are a perfectionist, this can be very stressful because you don’t want to do it wrong. If you are a procrastinator, this is an easy one to put off. If you are unsure of how to solve the problem, you are looking for help. This is where your network can give you an advantage.
Leading in this economy can be truly challenging. As women, it is more natural to do the task than it is to lead the team. It is easier to tell people what to do than to coach them, delegate to them, rely on them and support them to succeed. I operate under the policy that people have to learn by doing and learn by thinking, not by you telling them what to do and not by someone doing things for you. Being venerable, asking for help, trying something new that you may not be good at are all scary but part of what your network can support you with.
During a golf game last week, the conversation revolved around the fact that sometimes your job is mundane, boring and the same old thing but it is the people that make it interesting and compelling. Is there anything better than calling up someone you really like working with and giving them an opportunity to work with you? People you network with, people you play golf with, people who live in your neighborhood, someone that you just plain LIKE to work with? Call on people you meet to help you learn new things. Listen for best practices from those around you. Reach out and spend the time to get some brain power from the CREW membership.
One of my strengths is finding patterns in information. I have started to notice that the women I had on my calendar to have lunch with cancelled much more often ( due to too much to do at work ) whereas the men almost never cancelled a chance to network. Maybe it was about my incredible personality or the great food that was about to be eaten but what I really think is that it is about is priorities. Putting your head down and getting work done is very important. Getting your head out of the task and seeing a new perspective may help you solve that problem more effectively. There are solutions, analogies, patterns and support out there so make sure you don’t over task when really you need to get out there and network.

Winners of 2010 CREW San Diego Golf Tournament:
Boyer Moving & Storage |
Thank you to all who participated in CREW San Diego’s Annual Charity Golf Tournament to benefit CREW Foundation. Held at Lomas Santa Fe Executive Course in Solana Beach, the gorgeous weather reminded us all why we live in Southern California. Over 96 golfers took to the greens to enjoy a full day of networking, chatting with sponsors and of course a little bit of golf. Jason Hunking with ROEL Construction chaired this year’s SOLD OUT event with the help of the Special Events Committee. A portion of the money raised at the tournament supports CREW Foundation, which promotes and empowers women in the commercial real estate industry. CREW San Diego is delighted to shine this month’s Member Spotlight on Jill Hogan who has just rounded out her first year as Vice President of West Coast Retail Management, Inc. Jill, along with fellow CREW San Diego member Roberta Degener, joined forces last year to open West Coast Retail Management, a boutique real estate services company which specializes in retail property management and leasing.
CREW SD: How did you find your way into the Commercial Real Estate field?
Jill: I think like a lot of people I just landed here. When I was in college I spent summers working in multi-family property management and leasing, and when I graduated that experience comprised the bulk of my resume. After college I got a job as an Assistant Property Manager at a national REIT specializing in multi-family assets. I quickly found that retail property management and leasing was far more complex and interesting to me than residential so I made the move. I have been working to grow and develop my skill set in the commercial real estate field ever since.
CREW SD: At such a tenuous time in the industry and economy, what made you and Roberta decide to start your own company?
Jill: As colleagues for almost 10 years, we knew that our goals and philosophies were well aligned for a successful partnership. Things just came together for us last year to make the timing right. We knew that we would be well positioned to provide real estate owners and investors with quality, hands-on expertise to help their assets survive and thrive in these difficult times. With West Coast Retail Management, we are truly able to offer clients personal and tailored attention to effectively manage their shopping center’s operations, leasing and marketing at a time when all owners are looking to keep an edge and remain competitive.
CREW SD: How has your involvement with CREW helped you professionally?
Jill: As a relatively new member of CREW San Diego I have already come to appreciate the depth of knowledge, experience and diversity among the organization’s members. It has allowed me the opportunity to engage with some of the most influential professionals in the real estate industry. Especially now as a business owner, the opportunities that CREW sponsored events and programs have afforded me to network, align with and learn from other members has been invaluable. I hope to be able to contribute to the continued success of CREW San Diego.
About Jill
Jill maintains her California Real Estate Salesperson’s License and holds both the Real Property Administrator (RPA) and Facilities Management Administrator (FMA) designations from the Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI). In addition to being an active member of CREW San Diego, she is also a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA). Jill earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and is currently working toward her Masters in Business Administration at San Diego State University.

2010 CREW Foundation Chapter Champion
for CREW San Diego
|
|
|
In 2010, CREW San Diego elected to support CREW Foundation through its annual Charity Golf Tournament and Annual Wine Tasting Events. Below, former board member Debbie Curtis (Janez Properties) shares her experience and passion for the cause.
As the 2010 CREW San Diego Chapter Champion, I’m excited to share what I’m learning about CREW Foundation and its work to: build opportunities for women and girls in commercial real estate. After serving on the CREW San Diego Board of Directors, it is great to have this opportunity to continue learning more about CREW Network and CREW Foundation. There is so much to tap into and take advantage of to enhance both personal and professional growth. The following information will help us get to know CREW Foundation and how we can better support for the future of women in commercial real estate.
CREW Network is one of the first professional groups of its kind to create a national philanthropic effort. Founded in 1998 as the 501(c)3 philanthropic arm of CREW Network, CREW Foundation exists as the sole foundation where CREW Network members can make a difference in the lives of women and girls who want to achieve the same successes that members of CREW Network have attained through their careers in commercial real estate.
CREW Foundation shares CREW Network’s core values of Commitment, Excellence, Leadership, Influence, Integrity, Advancement and Professional Community, and also believes in:
- giving back to the people, community and industry that made us successful,
- creating opportunities for women and girls to achieve economic and professional success in the commercial real estate industry, and
- leading the industry in supporting education, cutting-edge research and career outreach programs that advance the success of women and girls in the commercial real estate industry
CREW Foundation raises funds to expand CREW CareerZone as the one-shop-stop for chapters, members and future members with programs such as CREW Careers®, eMentoring and UCREW.
In 2009 CREW Foundation granted CREW Network $100,000.00 to seed the newly launched CREW Network Scholarship Endowment in commemoration of CREW Network’s 20th anniversary, and is committed to supporting CREW Network in raising the $1,000,000.00 Endowment by January 2012.
CREW Foundation is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 charitable organization so contributions are deductible as charitable donations for federal income tax purposes. CREW Foundation is also classified as a public charity under section 509(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Please visit the www.crewfoundation.org to learn more about CREW Foundation.

As a volunteer organization, CREW San Diego operates fully from the efforts of the membership. Each committee contributes in large to the organization's overall success. We recently caught up with Angela and Colleen who chair the Sponsorship Committee. If you aren't yet involved in a committee... join us!
- What is the Sponsorship Committee?
The CREW San Diego sponsorship program is essential in the success of CREW San Diego by providing corporate support for programs and events. It is designed to provide Full, Associate and Affiliate members with an opportunity to effectively promote their services and products to the membership and greater commercial real estate community. These quality opportunities include our four-tiered corporate sponsorship program, lunch programs and special events, the golf tournament, directory advertising, as well as through special editorial supplements produced in partnership with our media partners.
- Update:
Our annual sponsors are in place for 2010 so our focus is to support the other committees throughout the rest of the year.
- Forecast for rest of the year accomplishments:
We will continue to work closely with the Programs committee
and the Special Events committee in securing sponsors to help support scheduled events. We will begin campaigning in September and October for 2011 corporate sponsors.
- Committee Needs from members:
Continued support from all CREW members, not just committee members, is needed during the remainder of 2010.
- Schedule of meetings.
We do not have a set monthly meeting date as most often we attend other committee meetings to see how we can assist with programs and events.
- How to get involved
Contact Angela or Colleen to discuss how you can get involved in the sponsorship committee.
